Review: The Wrath of the Titans

Sword & sandal frenzy

Oh, ye gods, could you please quit whining? That goes for you demigods, too. The folks who gave us the bombastic 3D remake of Clash of the Titans unleash Jonathan Liebesman's Wrath, and it's sensational — if you like being stuffed into a trash can and rolled down a hill. The story crosses sword & sandal frenzy with a soap opera about fathers and sons and jealous brothers. In it, half-human Perseus (Sam Worthington, doing the reluctant-hero bit) has to rescue his father Zeus (Liam Neeson) and save the world. Eclipsing Hades (Ralph Fiennes) as the baddie is war god Ares (Edgar Ramirez), who aligns with Zeus's badass father Kronos (a CGI creation with which Perseus faces off in the finale). The artificial world in which the actors move is drab and uninviting, the battles edited with so many quick cuts it's hard to get one's bearings, and the animated monsters are dispatched before we care about them.
