Review: Forks Over Knives

Plenty of food for thought

If Food Inc. didn't scare you off red meat, Forks over Knives just might do the trick. Its argument — that eating a whole-food, near-vegan diet — not only is good for you but can also reverse the progress of some diseases, even cancer, makes sense. The documentary feels like a 1950s PSA, and the fact that filmmaker Lee Fulkerson looks and sounds like Al Gore adds gravity to the proceedings. Doctors and scientists toss out some convincing stats backed up by the testimonials of those cured. To prove how much energy plant food can provide, Ultimate Fighter Mac Danzig pontificates on the value of eating green to kick ass. Although Fulkerson might have balanced his polemics with some other opinions, Forks over Knives still serves up plenty of food for thought.

Sport, similarly, consists of oversized, overpaid athletes pounding one another in simulated combat, but it's also a form of poetry.
