Review: Three

 A feel-good ending

The 2011 Boston LGBT Film Festival kicks off with what amounts to a classy TV-movie from Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) in which fortysomething Berlin professional couple Hanna (Sophie Rois) and Simon (Sebastian Schipper), both feeling the 20-year itch, fall in love with the same man (Devid Striesow). Adam is a research biologist with a teenage son; he also rides a motorcycle, sails on the Baltic, sings in a choir, supports the Union Berlin football team, and is sleeping with a male co-worker, so it's amazing that he can find time for Hanna and Simon. Even with two characters getting cancer and Spinoza trumping Freud on Hanna's philosophy-oriented TV show and Hanna and Simon running into each other at Körperwelten and Ground Control trying to reach Major Tom on the soundtrack, there's plenty of shadowy sex, and that, unfortunately, trumps the potentially interesting relationships, Tykwer settling for a feel-good ending in which Hanna gets pregnant and, in bed, three's company.

The man of the hour is running for high office, and he has the support of the party faithful and the moneyed interests, but before he can claim victory, he must ingratiate himself with the unwashed masses, even as rival interests conspire to blacken his name and deprive him of all popular appeal.
