Darius Jones, Cooper-Moore, and Rakalam Bob Moses
Outpost
Newcomer Darius
Jones draws on his rural Virginia roots and what writer Ed Hazell calls the
"pre-jazz African-American folk, spiritual, and blues tradition" for his
auspicious debut, Man'ish Boy (A Raw & Beautiful Thing) (AUM Fidelity). Jones's
long-toned, throbbing alto-sax melodies and the bluesy groove of veteran cohort
Cooper-Moore on piano and Rakalam Bob Moses on drums can suggest a less
frenetic Albert Ayler or a more explicitly churchy Cecil Taylor. Jones,
Cooper-Moore, and Moses celebrate the CD's release at Outpost 186, 186-1/2
