It's those personalized tunings and the way they compelled her to develop guitar melodies that make her special, along with the softly shaped tones and phrases of her blissfully organic vocals.

"My way of singing is very different from what audiences know from East African singers, which is a very powerful style. I don't feel that singing loud properly expresses the feelings in my music. It's not a question of lacking power. I can sing with power. What I'm interested in is depth.

"An artist can get lost doing like people used to do instead of what you want to do. I am always interested in creating my own way."
