Remember Frente!, the Australian combo responsible for that mid-’90s acoustic cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”? Lenka does: a few months ago this pint-sized diva from Down Under posted a similarly cutesy rendition of Modest Mouse’s “Gravity Rides Everything” to her MySpace page. Now, on her solo debut, she sounds determined to update the super-sunshiny folk pop of Frente!’s Marvin the Album. Lenka used to sing for a Mogwai-influenced electro-psych outfit called Decoder Ring, yet there’s nothing moody (or in need of decoding) here. “Life is a maze and love is a riddle,” she reveals in “The Show,” a bouncy, brass-flecked number in which she decides the best way to cope with confusion is to let it go and enjoy the show. Elsewhere, over a bubbly bongo groove in “Trouble Is a Friend,” she figures that since she can’t shake misfortune, she might as well make it feel at home. Producer Mike Elizondo embellishes the music with bells and whistles (both literal and figurative), but he keeps the spotlight on the singer’s airy little-girl coo. He knows that sugar can stand only so much sweetening.

  •   REVIEW: WHITNEY HOUSTON | I LOOK TO YOU  |  September 09, 2009
It's tempting to wonder whether super-producer Clive Davis, in another of his music-biz machinations, arranged for Whitney Houston to whiff last week on Good Morning America , which is reported to have altered Houston's vocals for broadcast after she sounded hoarse during her Central Park mini-concert.

Jay Reatard is the Lil Wayne of the Memphis garage-rock scene.
  •   JACK PEÑATE | EVERYTHING IS NEW  |  August 19, 2009
Not everything is new on Everything Is New , this young London singer's sophomore set, but enough is to make you wonder what on earth persuaded Jack Peñate to ditch the ample charms of his terrific debut.
  •   REVIEW: AMANDA BLANK | I LOVE YOU  |  August 11, 2009
Like many a party person before her, Philly-based electro-rap filly Amanda Blank wants you to know that she has a sensitive side.
  •   REVIEW: HOWLING BELLS | RADIO WARS  |  August 03, 2009
Australian dream-rock dudes (and dudette) toured North America earlier this year with Coldplay — and like Chris Martin's not-so-merry men, Howling Bells on their sophomore album attempt to dress up what might otherwise be a clutch of dour, namby-pamby white-person ditties with all manner of spicy studio-side textures.
