As if puny, leaf-free trees and a general lack of flowers in late April weren't enough of a message to the post-winter season to hurry its shit up, art schools across Boston are poised to open their annual May fundraisers, all in the name of spring. There are also some exciting student screenings and exhibitions to check out while you're shopping for art on the cheap.
MassArt's ANNUAL SPRING SALE, May 4-9, puts original works of art by MassArt students and alumni into the hands of eager collectors (and those hunting for a last-minute Mother's Day gift). And if you're there May 8, be sure to catch "SQUEALING PEGS," MassArt's seventh annual program of shorts created by the school's animation students, with styles ranging from cartoon, stop-motion, pixilation, abstract, hand-drawn, documentary, and experimental animation. Animation-obsessed fans can get their fix two days before everyone else at "PEGGIN' OUT," another 70-minute screening of selected animated shorts and films made by MassArt sophomores, juniors, and seniors . . . because one animation film festival is never enough (and because art students need something cool to watch while totally blazed).
On May 15 and 16, the cinematic events at MassArt continue with "BRAZIL ON SCREEN 2009: 2ND ANNUAL BRAZILIAN STUDENT FILM & PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL," which brings student-produced film, video, and photography from Brazil to Boston audiences. What began last year as a collaboration between MassArt and FAAP and UNIMEP in São Paulo now includes photographic and film works culled from 10 Brazilian universities. These narrative and documentary films feature offer unique glimpses into Brazilian culture, tradition, and fantasy.
The SMFA, meanwhile, has no intention of being left out of the "get your students and alumni to sell shit" spring fundraising sweepstakes; on May 8 and 9, the school presents its SPRING SIDEWALK SALE, a kind of garage-sale version of the fall's "InsideOut: The Museum School Art Sale." Paintings, photography, works on paper, ceramics, prints, and other work by roughly 50 Museum School artists will be placed on the sidewalk between the school and the Museum of Fine Arts. Prices start at $5; proceeds benefit Haley House, the "trim and feisty" human-service provider in the South End that works with the homeless and other disadvantaged people.
