MORE ABOUT AARDVARK JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Winner of the 2000 Independent Music Awards, The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, now in its 35th season, is known for its exhilarating concerts spanning the jazz spectrum, from the music of Duke Ellington and other jazz greats to original works by founder/music director Mark Harvey, to performances with film, dance, and poetry. The band has premiered more than 100 works for jazz orchestra and has released 9 CDs to rave reviews around the globe. In April 2008, the prestigious Leo Records label will issue Aardvark's 10th CD, American Agonistes, Music in Time of War. Leo Records (U.K.) is one of the world's leading adventurous music labels, with a catalogue including such notables as Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Sun Ra. With global distribution of 10 CDs and wide-ranging performances in festivals, clubs, concert halls, colleges and universities, Aardvark has been a major force in the international jazz scene for more than 30 years. JazzTimes touted the band as “a bracing walk on the wild side of the big band spectrum...Aardvark suggests the best and the brashest of Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, George Russell, and even Frank Zappa.” Jazz Review (U.K.) praised Aardvark for “exuberance, imagination and sheer brio,” while The Boston Phoenix called the band “one of the great idiosyncratic treasures of the Boston music scene” and Downbeat marveled at their “awe-inspiring audience fascination.” Trumpeter-composer Mark Harvey is Aardvark’s founder, music director and primary arranger. He has recorded with George Russell (Blue Note) and Baird Hersey (Arista/Novus) and performed with Gil Evans, Claudio Roditi, Howard McGhee, Sam Rivers, and others. He is a winner of awards from ASCAP, the National Endowment, and Meet-the-Composer-Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest Commissioning Program.
