Locked in at the Captured Tracks showcase for the night. It’s the most solid line-up of the official shows for sure: Blouse on now (playing in a pink cloud) then Soft Metals, Widowspeak, Craft Spells, Beach Fossils. The central clubs aren’t usually my favorite — this show is at The Parish on e. 6th — but it is rad to see such a deserving label filling such a huge room. -LP
Trevor Powers (Youth Lagoon) is so tortured and so covered in denim. Emotional electro, sounds like dream adolescence & the desolate midwest. Caught him yesterday at brooklyn vegan’s show, but he played a zillion times this week and is coming to Boston soon. Can’t tell if people at his shows are connecting to the sound or are just excited to see someone from Idaho.
Oh hey it’s Craft Spells straight chillin on 6th outside the Wadzilla party at Treehouse. Indie Buzz Bands, they’re just like us here at SXSW.
Well done, Wadzilla. U look good bb _mm
Herra fucking Terra at Wadzilla. _mm
No but seriously — Boston is ruling Austin. _mm
I know there are now laws against saying shit like “killing it,” but Jesus fuck You Can Be A Wesley are laying it down HARD right now at 512. Our city’s musical wealth is insane right now. Everyone crushing it, destroying it, slaying it, killing killing killing… __ MM
Total Slacker at yesterday’s WNYU showcase at Baby Blue Recording Studio. My favorite showcase of this year’s SXSW so far, for sure. Total Slacker, Coasting, Royal Baths, Dive, Bleached, Fidlar and a bunch of other rad bands played in a big parking lot space outside of the studio, which felt like more of a garage. Heading back there in a bit to catch Boy Friend at 3. -LP
Mmothss from Ireland kicking off today’s show at the Hype Machine’s “Hype Hotel”, a spot where different bloggers have been curating lineups all week. Today’s is curated by @Nialler9, a/k/a Dublin-based music blogger/show organizer/DJ Niall Byrne. This set is feeling pretty perfect right now. Shimmery ambient electronic sounds are a good way to ease into the last day of SXSW. -lp
After an unbelievably long week of workshops and shows, titanic blunts and dozens of rap sets, I had reservations about joining Occupy Austin (also known as OATX online) for a Friday night romp across Sixth Street, the heart of both downtown and SXSW. My feet are bloody at this point, and I knew that an Occupy march would only mess them up worse.
Everyone is trying to sound like Dinosaur Jr this year.
Some band or other who I though was going to be Wavves but wasn’t as it turned out.
UPDATE: oh durr, it’s Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, I guess? Hard to say for certain what with not caring either way.
Yo can anyone else see a dancing bunny or is it just me?
Wrapped up the Boston Phoenix photo shoot at Austin Metal & Iron with enough time to catch 2:54 live at the Fader Fort. Don’t know much about them beyond the fact they went on at 2:54; that their moody, shoegazy sound reminded me of early Lush; and that it’s way too early for this shit… Will likely love this band in a few weeks when I’m stumbling drunk down Harvard Avenue after the pill at… 2:54am. _MM
YO DO THESE RED FACES MAKE OUR FACES LOOK RED?
