Ads Classified: Hillary Takes on Health Care

Following up on her policy address yesterday on the subject, Hillary Clinton has trotted out a spot on her health care plan. It's simple and direct and along with the speech, it's taking an issue that was once an Achilles Heel (given her failure with a plan in her husband's administration) and making it into a plus. She now owns the issue, at least temporarily. It's very smart politics.

Joe Biden is on the air with an ad where he talks straight to the camera and speaks eloquently about a flag-draped coffin returning home and how the war in Iraq must end.
Blake Dvorak at RealClear Politics raises the right issue: Isn't Biden the Democratic candidate who is least identified with ending the war? And if so, what is he trying to do in this ad?

Ads Classified: Giuliani Goes for Radio Ads

In contrast to everyone else in the campaign, Rudy Giuliani in the early stages is going old-fashioned by running his ads on radio. The most notable, "Fence," running mostly in New Hampshire and South Carolina, focuses on his efforts to deal with immigration.
Radio buys obviously are much cheaper than TV ones so if the strategy works, it's good politics.

Ads Classified: Romney Thanks Iowa

Mitt Romney, who leaves no stone unturned, is back on the air in Iowa, thanking the voters for his straw poll victory. The ad features his speech last Saturday, ending with the line, "Change begins in Iowa and change begins today."
It wasn't even a good speech. But you'd never know it here.
Interesting point: By running on "change," Romney is now running against Bush. It's a clever strategy.

Ads Classified: Clinton Runs First Ad -- And It's A Good One

Hillary Clinton has finally hit the airwaves in Iowa -- the last major Democratic candidate to do so. And her ad is a strong one. Titled "Invisible," it talks about all the invisible ordinary people in America who are ignored by the Bush Administration but won't be ignored by hers.
The ad subtly goes right after Barack Obama's main weakness, discussed earlier in a Tote Board column

Ads Classified: Obama's New Bio Ad in Iowa

Barack Obama is up with a new glossy 60-second biographical ad in Iowa, available here -- and it's a good one. It plays on the candidate's strengths as a healer and uniter -- and draws the unspoken comparisons with Hillary on the war and on ties to lobbyists.
To the extent the ad has a weakness, it ties into Obama's weakness: This is an ad with a much stronger appeal to independent voters who aren't fiercely partisan.

During the debate, one YouTube questioner asked the Illinois Democrat how he would respond to African-Americans who say he is not black enough.

Until now, Mitt Romney has pretty much had the GOP airwaves to himself -- which is one reason he's sprinted to a lead in the first two states. Now, Rudy Giuliani has begun running 3 radio ads in Iowa and New Hampshire including this one, "Out of Control." They're essentially bio ads, focusing on the challenges Mayor Giuliani faced in New York dealing with the economy and crime.

Ads Classified: Elizabeth Edwards Appears on Behalf of Her Husband

We did a column several weeks ago on how big an asset Elizabeth Edwards had become in her husband's race for the nomination. Thus, it's no surprise that she now stars in one of his ads, now running in New Hampshire. It's essentially a glowing testimonial -- one that would be almost embarrassing in its effusiveness were it coming from anyone else.

Ads Classified: Mitt Romney's New Ad "Ocean" Catches A Wave

Mitt Romney is up with a new 60-second spot, "Ocean," available here. It's the best ad of the campaign so far because it eloquently addresses an issue -- the polluted culture in which kids grow up -- that no one is talking about in the campaign but everyone talks about privately. As kids play on a beach, Romney talks about how he'd like to clean up the violence and pornography of everyday American life that surround children on the internet or in video games.

Barack Obama has begun his advertising foray, with two biographical ads, available here, running in Iowa. They stress what makes him different -- namely, his "togetherness rhetoric" (which first came to national attention at the 2004 Democratic convention) and his decisions out of school both to work as a community organizer and then serve in the state legislature.

How Yesterday's Supreme Court Decision Loosening Ad Restrictions in The Campaign Finance Law Will Affect the Campaign

Yesterday, by a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court (in the words of the NY Times) ruled that "the restrictions on television advertisements paid for from corporate or union treasuries in the weeks before an election amounted to censorship of core political speech unless those advertisements explicitly urge a vote for or against a particular candidate."
