The Obama New Era of Bi-Partisanship Ends After Approximately One Week.
It had to be this way, of course. There was no way the GOP was going to back a huge big government stimulus bill for both ideological and political reasons. So, Obama's first economic bill -- like Bill Clinton's in 1993 -- will be labeled a "Democratic bill" and the chips will fall where they may.
This isn't to say that Obama can't continue to be more open in his approach to the other side as he has been. And that could change the tone of DC -- but only marginally. The problem is the system isn't really designed to work in a non-partisan way -- especially given the partisan nature of Congress.
He has the votes to pass anything he wants, of course. The interesting wrinkle will be how many Democrats jump ship.
