Instant Analysis of GOP Iowa Caucus Results: Huckabee Decisively Defeats Romney

    Early evening:

    Mike Huckabee has won the Iowa caucuses decisively over Mitt Romney -- perhaps by something approaching double digits. This is a severe blow obviously to the Romney candidacy which now faces virtually a must-win in a New Hampshire contest Tuesday that appears to be strongly leaning to John McCain.
    Huckabee's showing is also not great news for Fred Thompson, even if he finishes a distant third in Iowa, since he faces a must-win in South Carolina and Huckabee will contest him there for conservative votes.
    Tonight's showing confirms that should McCain win on Tuesday, he is the party's front-runner, at least for the moment, though Michigan and South Carolina will loom large before Florida on January 29.
