John Edwards has kicked off his media campaign with a smart ad that can be seen
here. A slick takeoff on the traditional "man in the street" ad, it features about a half dozen ordinary citizens, mostly young, expressing their outrage at the President's veto of Congress's Iraq emergency spending bill that called for a phased withdrawal of troops. In the commercial, these ordinary citizens call on Congress to send the bill to the President "again and again."
According to press reports, the ad (called "We the People") will only run in Washington D.C. and on the internet. And its aim is obvious: Edwards is trying to position himself to the left of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on the war and gain the support of the activist wing of his party. The key, as Dick Morris wrote today
here, is how Obama responds: If he votes for a compromise bill that has no call for phased withdrawal, Edwards will be able to outflank him on the issue.
Edwards continues to run a very tactically intelligent campaign.
