Merry christmas from Mary Lou Lord: she just uploaded the full 45-minute video file -- complete with classic Billy Ruane intro -- of a legendary Cambridge gig by ELLIOTT SMITH. (It was #14 on our list of the 40 Greatest Boston Concerts of All Time.) This one comes from January 8, 1998 -- about a month after the theatrical release of Boston's national anthem, Good Will Hunting, introduced the world to "Miss Misery," but still two months before he played it at the Oscars.
Hopefully, some of you have already begun devouring the top-11 lists of our critics over here. If you have, you've discovered that this year we've linked each critic's list to a Spotify playlist of their picks -- which will also double as a quick seminar in which genres of music Spotify is a little spotty on.
Oh, Krusty: we heart you too, big guy.
In last week's episode of The Simpsons (full episode now watchable here), Krusty gets a show on a premium-cable network. The execs tell him: "Here you don't have to worry about budgets, and the critics are in our pocket." Krusty, horrified: "Even the Boston Phoenix?" Exec #1: "If we don't we'll burn it down.
Our fearless leader Brad Mindich is out in San Francisco with Metallica as the band celebrates its 30th anniversary with a string of once-in-a-lifetime gigs at the Fillmore. Here's his photos and report from last night:
If you're a Metallica fan these four shows at the Fillmore were everything you could have hoped for from the masters of metal.
Chris Faraone (@Fara1) and Ariel Shearer (@arielshearer) were on the scene early Saturday morning as Boston Police -- many with black tape covering badge numbers -- arrested around 40 protesters and cleared Dewey Square. According to reports, two legal observers were among those arrested. Faraone, who has ripped the BPD a new asshole on numerous occasions and has been covering Occupy around the clock since the beginning -- here in Boston and around the country -- was singled out by the police and removed from a designated press viewing area.

Caught about 90 minutes of RYAN ADAMS's solo set at the Orpheum last night -- and um, not in the mood to be all rock-criticky and whatnot, but it was pretty awesome. Played "Oh My Sweet Carolina" twice (because the bros were loud-talking in the lobby the first time), did a fancy version of "Sylvia Plath" at the piano, played some of the Heartbreaker-y songs off the new record, and then went back to the piano for this: a version of GALAXIE 500's "Blue Thunder" that he worked up at soundcheck

Is Occupy Boston dismantling the Dewey Square camp?
All photos by Liz Pelly.
Our reporters @LizPelly, @Fara1, @Eugenia_Will, and @arielshearer are on the ground in Dewey Square this afternoon, as OCCUPY BOSTON preps for a midnight deadline set by Mayor Tom Menino for the occupants to leave the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
Liz Pelly reports that some campers are breaking down their tents -- but also points out that this is being done autonomously.
The ACLU and the National Lawyers Guild, who filed the injunction on behaf of Occupy Boston that prevented the City of Boston from removing the group from Dewey Square -- an injunction that was voided today -- say they are "reviewing the decision with our clients to determine all their options." Here's the full statement:
