For people with their heads on straight, November 2008 takes a back seat to January 2009 — when Lost launches into its fifth season. Oh, how we simmer with anticipation! How the imponderable expanse of the next six months stretches out before us and mocks our weekly travails! Thank Jacob we have bands staffed by dorks as devout as we are to help us survive this interminable famine of serialized emotional pandering and kitschy weirdness. Thank Jacob for PREVIOUSLY ON LOST.

Alina Simone: She grew up here, we swear!

Unofficial rule of thumb: if your personal exposure to within a 50-mile radius of metro Boston exceeds one year (with school years counting), we get to say you’re from here. That said, meet Boston’s own ALINA SIMONE — if you haven’t already. She’s Ukraine-born and now a Brooklynite by way of Austin, but we swear she grew up around here for a while. Her searing, often mordant folk has as many marks of Mary Lou Lord as it has hints of Damon and Naomi — but with a far higher grit factor. “Half of My Kingdom” suffers not for being sung in Russian — the unrelenting scratch of electric guitar, the lonely determined banjo, the pining horns, and Simone’s quavering whisper tell tales of their own. It’s one of many dark, bright moments on her latest, Everyone Is Crying Out to Me, Beware, which came out yesterday on 54° 40’ or Fight! Download "Half My Kingdom" after the jump, plus Michael Brodeur's interview with the girl herself.

DOWNLOAD: MC Exposition, "50 Million Pictures" (mp3)

MC Exposition does this strange thing when he performs: he rhymes so that people in the crowd can understand him. That’s one reason his organic hip-hop outfit, Audible Mainframe, was Boston’s most popular live rap group until it relocated to Long Beach last year.

DOWNLOAD: The Pilot Light, "Ergot" (mp3)

What do you do when a band called the Pilot Light book their last show ever? Well, first you resist the call of the easy metaphor — for it is so seductive. Then you move on to grief or indifference depending on whether you’ve ever heard the band roar through a set of their scratchy, wonky, Mclusky-esque post-punk tantrums.

DOWNLOAD: The Lights Out, "Liquid" (mp3)

Among the things we learned from nine pages of supplementary material provided by the Lights Out: they’ve been called “peppy,” “irresistible,” and “muscular”; they boast about their good parking karma; at least one of them is a recovered hippie; they’re really, really into Miller High Life; the quartet somehow formed before any of them had ever heard a note from any of the others; and “Liquid,” a jaunty little ditty from their new EP, Heist!, is about shallow people dating and subsequently taking arbitrary revenge on each other.

    DOWNLOAD: Teletextile, "Safer Two" (mp3)

It’s always a bummer when a perfectly good Boston band sneak off and become all Brooklyn before we even get a chance to develop a crush on them. The good news is that the latest from Teletextile is chock full of remote-crush fodder: ambient electronics, sumptuous arrangements brimming with pianos and strings, ambitious melodies, and, most notably, the enchanting feather-light vocals of Pamela Martinez — who has inched away from the overwrought idiosyncrasies that had us blurbing her as the American Björk.

Hardcore screamer turned folk-rocker Jake Brennan? Fronting a sleazy, sex-and-drugs-obsessed party band? With help from half of Read Yellow and Mac from Big Digits? It shouldn’t work — hell, it shouldn’t even exist. And yet here are Bodega Girls, playing a twisted version of throwback-jersey disco, with nods to Donna Summer and the Jackson 5.

DOWNLOAD: Daniel Bennett Group, "Andrew Variations" (mp3)

Daniel Bennett is one of a handful of local DIY jazz and improv players (Eric Hofbauer, Andrew Fenlon, and Daniel Ian Smith are a few others) who’s making his own luck by booking his own shows and concert series in offbeat venues. His Daniel Bennett Group feature his light, airy tenor saxophone floating in rushes of eighth and 16th notes over acoustic-guitar chords that have as much to do with ancient British folk as jazz.

    DOWNLOAD: Anthems MA, "Bullet" (mp3)

For the most part, it’s less important what a band say they do than what they do. So when local foursome Anthems MA (formerly Anthems for Odyssey) claim to “stretch at the seams of their creative paradigm” to attain “the shimmer and pop of a high-class whore’s lip gloss” — grab that grain of salt, then listen to the newgazy bounty that is “Bullet,” which, along with a handful of other songs available on their MySpace page, is a good indicator of the type of gauzy gusto the group bring to their upcoming full-length debut, Time Starts Now

    DOWNLOAD: Appomattox, "Sparx" (mp3)

One thing we at the Phoenix had sworn never to talk about but have since come to terms with is that we keep this little framed picture of Appomattox under the nightstand. Each night, right before bed, we take it out, gaze at it by moonlight, and release long, girlish sighs.

Charlie and Eli’s Soul Clap house parties have been destroying bars for a couple of years now, but they just got around to putting out their 12-inch debut, “The Giraffe” (courtesy of AirDrop, and on yellow vinyl, no less!). Soft-footed, veldt-snooping vloops! of melody frame a minimalist-techno safari on wax.

Duncan Wilder Johnson has been honing his metal geekdom for a couple of decades longer than he's been sharpening his metal chops, but it’s hard to argue with Destruct-A-Thon, a band who take their cues from culty New England rowdies like Scissorfight and Sam Black Church.

    FRIEND: Zozobra at Myspace

Ed. note: we posted this a couple weeks ago, but then this showed up: apparently Caleb's had a change of heart and will be releasing this under his pre-existing Zozobra moniker instead of as the self-titled debut by a solo band that would've been called Heatseaker.
