The late SETH PUTNAM, who died last June of a heart attack, was the focal point of the legendary Boston grindcore mess Anal Cunt. But drummer Tim Morse was often the glue, and has been the band's most entertaining and reliable curator of institutional wisdom. At Putnam's funeral last year, he reeled off hours of stories -- funny, sad, incomprehensible -- about AC's career, and not a few people came away thinking that Morse ought to write a book.
In the pantheon of Anal Cunt songs, "I Just Saw The Gayest Guy On Earth" is among the most memorable -- for one thing, it's an a-cappella tune, sung in the round. (Perhaps it was Seth Putnam's impression of what the Boston Gay Men's Chorus sounded like?) But unless you happened to be living in Allston, Massachusetts in the early 1990s, the lyrics would've been inscrutible: Putnam used that song, and much of the rest of the album 40 More Reasons To Hate Us, which got national distribution through Earache Records, to take aim at then-little-known landmarks, bands, and neghborhood characters.
SETH PUTNAM, the Newton native who set out to create music that represented the end of music, and succeeded; and who survived a 2004 drug overdose that landed him in a coma from which his doctors predicted he would not come out of, and returned to the stage less than a year later; died on Saturday morning of a heart attack.
We heard all kinds of crazy shit yesterday about shows that, let's
face it, we were all smart enough not to attend. First there was BU's
Daily Free Press -- the only media outlet that attended? -- reporting back about a very, very, very undersold kickoff of the Perez Hilton-backed IDA MARIA tour,
which resulted in the singer of that band having a Cat Power-level
meltdown midway through their first song (see above for video
evidence). According to Idolator, they dropped off the tour soon after.
there was the story that popped up on the Bridge 9 messageboard about
the latest exploits of ANAL CUNT's Seth Putnam: this time allegations that he punched a female audience member in the face.
thought there might be some people out there who were disappointed they
didn't get to see Ida Maria or Anal Cunt. After the jump: video of both
of them from recent engagements in which they neither melted down
publicly nor punched anyone in the face.
As promised, the all-star ANAL CUNT lineup kicked off a tour last weekend with a set that included a sneak peak at their forthcoming album, Wearing Out Our Welcome. The surprise? The new shit -- or "hot new traxxxx" as Seth Putnam is calling them -- is indeed a different look. "Accessible" would still be a stretch, but shout-along choruses, sub-250bpm drums, and lyrics about fucking? And (wait for it) .
Speaking of things risen from the dead, ANAL CUNT's Seth Putnam is back and evidently better than ever. Last year he took the original AC lineup on a tour performing the group's pre-1991 scumfuck output; now he's put together an A.C. all-star lineup (Tim Morse on drums, Josh Martin on guitar) for a greatest-hits tour that kicks off tonight at Church.
