For a while, Beck's "Record Club" project - in which he recruits various musicians like Charlotte Gainsbourg, MGMT, Wilco, Feist, Jamie Liddell, and Devendra Banhart to spend a day in a studio and record a cover version of a full album - was more intriguing in theory than in practice. The first two album choices - Velvet Underground and Nico and Songs of Leonard Cohen - were good, but a little safe, and the third choice, Skip Spence's Oar, was just okay.
So . . . bad news first. Remember that THURSTON MOORE - J MASCIS - ANDREW WK supergroup we told you about? Well, um . . . it didn't happen. Or, well, it kind of happened. But Andrew WK didn't show up. He didn't bother to cancel, either. He, like, just didn't show up. As in, the rest of DEMOLISHED THOUGHTS were hanging out on stage, waiting.
