Considering its eclectic line-up, this year's Newport Folk Festival proves that in 2011, it's hard to define what is and is not part of "folk culture." By purist definitions, music made by a major-label pop group like TEGAN AND SARA wouldn't qualify. But if more loosely, "folk" can be applied to any "folk group" that maintains distinct traditions, and boasts visible customs, music, dress, etcetera, then Tegan and Sara fit the "folk" label, based solely on the customary culture amongst the fans at their shows.
We were praying for Rihanna + Loretta Lynn + The Gossip, but we'll take what they're giving: the Boston stop of the revamped Lilith Fair has been announced, and although DARKBUSTER presumably still won't be there, we will.
The big names: KELLY CLARKSON and TEGAN AND SARA. The biggish names? CAT POWER and local gal CARLY SIMON, who presumably will either get each other through their notoriously awful stage fright .
Our sister station WFNX scored an exclusive living-room-style acoustic show with TEGAN AND SARA, who stopped by the Ames Hotel in Boston on Saturday before their Orpheum Theater gig. The sisters played for an audience of about 20 listeners (and us) -- but fear not, if you weren't among the winners, we've got video right here.
Hey, remember that new Amanda Palmer record we were telling you about? The one where her and her friend pretend to be a pair of conjoined twins called EVELYN EVELYN? This just in: it's apparently turned into the guest-star friendliest album since that Melvins record where Leif Garrett covered Smells Like Teen Spirit.
