Note: Sleigh Bells performs Thursday July 22 at Royale with Die Antwoord. Check the accompanying feature on the South African rap sensation here.
Let's face it: Sleigh Bells are heavy. Heavy heavy heavy. Oh sure, they sugar-coat it for all the kids out there who don't normally listen to metal and whatnot.

most people who listen to music a lot, I get easily fatigued hearing
people verbally hand-wring over the future of music, technology, and
the various synergy thereof. But that didn't stop me from snatching up
a free pass to this past weekend's Vice Magazine/Intel blowout, held at
the Meatpacking District's Milk Studios.
The intra-office opinion gap on SLEIGH BELLS is already nearing fistfight levels of acrimony -- half of us are in love with the singer, and the other half wants to punch that half in the face with this nonsense, already. How many more videos are we going to post under the pretext of "documentation," while really just giving us an excuse to get up close and personal with that cute singer? Fuck you: as many as we damn well please.
at Pitchfork’s Saturday-night South By Southwest showcase last March, I
coaxed SLEIGH BELLS’ Alexis Krauss to crowd surf during their
M.I.A.-ish punk anthem “Crown on the Ground” (video here). She hit the crowd and briefly fell into my arms.
SLEIGH BELLS + Saturday, March 20 at Fader Fort
Our videographer P. Nick Curran was lucky enough to catch it on video: right up there is the moment SLEIGH BELLS became stars. Not that they were without buzz coming in. They emerged blog-famous from CMJ this winter; MIA's putting out their album in May. And there's no secrets about their appeal: ex-screamokid Derek Miller blaring feelgood metal riffs, ex-popsinging siren Alexis Krauss earning her tattoos with updated Digital Hardcore swagger, iPod handling the rest.
Below: SLEIGH BELLS perform “Crown on the Ground” at the Levis/Fader Fort, on Saturday.
