Grouplove, Manchester Orchestra, and WFNX's Julie Kramer at the WFNX Sapporo House at Coachella
MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA and GROUPLOVE have been hanging out at the WFNX Coachella House, resulting in this impromptu collaboration recorded around the kitchen table. So here it is: Nirvana's "Something in the Way," sans accompaniment.
Thanks to former WFNX DJ DUANE BRUCE, this one's now up on the interwebs: the fabled performance given by the pre-Grohl version of NIRVANA at once-and-future goth club MAN RAY in Cental Square, Cambridge, on April 18, 1990. Depending on who you ask, there were somewhere between 60 and 75 people in attendance.
EDITOR'S NOTE: It was no accident that, the night before Nevermind came out -- September 23, 1991 -- Nirvana chose to play Boston. (It ranks second only to James Brown at the Garden in our list of the 40 Greatest Concerts in Boston History

How does MARY LOU LORD know what KURT COBAIN smelled like? If you're asking that question, you're obviously not a Nirvana superfan. For an introduction to the story of how Mary Lou met Kurt, check out this excerpt from Everett True's NIRVANA: THE BIOGRAPHY, which picks up the story exactly 20 years ago today.
For argument's sake, let's say you were a famous musician married to Courtney Love, and in 1994 you faked your own death and planned to anonymously live out the rest of your years somewhere far, far away from both the irritating spotlight and the even more irritating ol' wifey. You'd probably end up eventually busking on a Russian subway station, right? And now that everyone has a camera phone (welcome to the show, motherland!), it's no surprise the jig is finally up, right? Right?
By now you've likely seen the video of the late Kurt Cobain's likeness being used as a playable avatar in Guitar Hero 5 (and playing mostly songs the real Cobain would have found appalling). Most people, including the author of that video that circulated the internet so quickly, suspected Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, was responsible for it somehow.
