Back in April, the Phoenix teamed up with Great Scott to start shooting and recording live performances at the Allston Rock Club, and not just drunkenly between picklebacks with a shaky Flipcam. Among the first of these sessions was with Queens-based indie-pop kids Freelance Whales, who roll back into town tonight at the Middle East in Cambridge.
Not long ago, some folks from Great Scott approached us with an idea: they wanted to video some performances at the Allston rock club. So, we here at the Phoenix are pleased to debut the first of what we hope will be many LIVE AT GREAT SCOTT sessions! All video here has been shot and edited by Dustin Devlin, Matt Thompson, Fabian Perez, and Tracy Drane (who also serves as interviewer).
SXSW DAY ONE
12:20 PM. PASTE MAGAZINE PARTY AT GALAXY ROOM. Sneak in the door just in time to learn how to pronounce BASIA BULAT's first name, and to see her play a really great song on a granny harp -- which will be your new favorite instrument if you like to hammer on shit and strum on shit at the same time. I have no idea why there aren't more black metal bands with electric granny harps.
