We try to keep the horn-tooting to a minimum around here, but we'd be remiss if we didn't give a heads-up about Boston Phoenix music editor and WFNX local-music host MICHAEL MAROTTA's foray into the record business. Operated out of his bedroom, VANYA RECORDS was launched to put out a limited-edition 7-inch by local synth-pop heroes BEARSTRONAUT
We said tweeted on Friday that we'd post some video of the 02.17 Boston Phoenix vs Ryan's Smashing Life gig once we finally sobered up, and by the power of vodka here we are a week later. Thanks to everyone who came out to Great Scott, the RSL crew, and the bands that performed: DIRTY BOMBS (who still really need a press photo), THE CINNAMON FUZZ (who know how to party) and BEARSTRONAUT, the dance-mad headliner that was captured above in groggy Phlipcam glory by recent Phoenix acquisition Sooz.
Thursday night On The Download jumps off the digital page and into the nightclubs at the first-ever Boston Phoenix vs Ryan's Smashing Life throwdown at Great Scott. We're rolling with the Allston Dance City theme, partying with one of our favorite Boston-based music blogs while showcasing three local acts set to blow up in the 2k11: BEARSTRONAUT, THE CINNAMON FUZZ and DIRTY BOMBS
Hey, we're throwing a party. On The Download is teaming up with ace music blog Ryan's Smashing Life for a midweek dance party on Thursday, February 17 at Great Scott. The night features an electronic troika of OTD faves: BEARSTRONAUT, THE CINNAMON FUZZ and DIRTY BOMBS, with DJ sets by Ryan and I, my first non-pill DJ gig in ages.
Pity that the Boston Music Awards nominations were announced late last month, just before the release of this track from Lowell electro-punk quartet BEARSTRONAUT — they could’ve been a contender. Even more so because they seem to have ditched the punk half of the genre niche on this almost six-minute-long excursion through dance-floor euphoria, where they trade attitude and the imperfections of jittery rock angles for a washy synth sheen.
