When the BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS secret-service-like security at the former Charles Street Jail and current Liberty Hotel don't pat you down and run a quick background check at the front door, it's almost shocking. They are at the bottom of the escalator. And the top of the escalator. They are on the stair cases, and balconies and in every bathroom (duh).
If there is one theme in this year’s list of Boston Music Awards winners, it’s the heavy slew of repeat offenders. Mean Creek, who won Album/EP of the Year for Hemophiliac, took home the same honor for October’s brilliant Youth Companion LP. The Mexi-cali folk of David Wax Museum took home a second-straight Song of the Year statue, following up last year’s “Born With A Broken Heart” with the ironically named “Harder Before It Gets Easier” (at least the three-year old duo is making it look easy from the start).
So there's a weird conspiracy theory that pops up on the interwebs every year before the BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS -- that it's possible to determine the winners based soley on who is performing at the party. The list of performers is announced along with the nominations several weeks before the BMAs, and some scoff at their chances of winning if they are not asked to play live at the Liberty Hotel.
Welcome to the Ghost Host edition of the Boston Accents playlist recap! As you may or may not know, I landed my dumb ass in the hospital earlier this week, and was discharged around 4pm this afternoon. Doctors told me I needed to stay in bed a few days after release, so to keep the BOSTON ACCENTS momentum alive, we decided to load up the setlist with nominated songs from this year's BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS, which were announced on Tuesday (pre-hospital, bro).
This year's BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS will return to the Liberty Hotel on Sunday, November 20, its third year in the glitzy former prison unit. A few years ago at the Orpheum the BMAs went up against Lady Gaga at the Wang -- this year's course of conflict opponent across town is the much-anticipated M83 show at the House of Blues (which was upgraded from the Paradise due to ticket demand).
