[tonight in JP] Daniel Bachman plays spooky folk guitar @ Aviary

Daniel Bachman playing in the living room of Philly's Dreamcastle in March.

Earlier this year when I was on tour with QUILT en route to SXSW, we stopped in Philly for a show at a DIY house venue called Dreamcastle. There, we had the pleasure of seeing a set by DANIEL BACHMAN, a Philly-via-Fredericksburg, VA musician who plays instrumental acoustic guitar songs so intricate and mesmerizing, it's hard to believe he doesn't use a loop pedal. Inspired equally by drone and psychedelic sounds as traditional Americana, Bachman's show was compelling; I remember the entire room falling silent as soon as he started to play.

Here is a video of that set in Philly:

Since our stop to Philly, Bachman has released Seven Pines, his debut for Tompkins Square Records. Two tracks from that album are online to stream: “Copperhead” (via NPR) and “Seven Pines” (via Pitchfork).

When he first started making music in 2007, Bachman performed under the name Sacred Harp, playing self-booked house shows with the likes of Prince Rama and Amen Dunes. In 2010, he released a Sacred Harp tape with the label Mirror Universe Tapes, who at the time were also releasing early music by Washed Out and Toro y Moi. In retrospect, it is really fitting that those bands were all involved with the same label. When I talk about Quilt, something I often point out is how in a time when so much experimental and psychedelic music is being made using computers and electronic instruments, it's refreshing to hear them making similarly atmospheric sounds using guitars, banjo, tambourines, and vocal harmonies. Daniel Bachman's music evokes similar thoughts.

Tonight, Bachman plays the Aviary Gallery on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain with experimental harp player Sophie Dickinson and Whitehaus staples Arkm Foam and Pancho the Kid. The show starts at 8pm; donations for touring bands will be appreciated. Details on Facebook.
