The annual Boston rock matchmaker party ONE NIGHT BAND returns to the Middle East in Cambridge in September, and today organizer Ashley Willard announced the preliminary list of participants, which includes members of MELLOW BRAVO, GHOST BOX ORCHESTRA, FAT CREEPS, THE SHEILA DIVINE, THE FAGETTES, and a handful of others. Oh, and WILL DAILEY and WALTER SICKERT. This is a hell of a group set to come together in Central Square on September 8, and there are some added bonuses for the fourth official go-round.
"This year we've added Girls Rock Campaign Boston as a benefactor, and we're really pumped to have a lot of ladies in our lineup," says Willard, who is a core volunteer for GRC and just got done teaching bass and coaching her little group of sweetheart misfits, Spawn Of Satan. "This could be the year that we see the first ever all-female one night band. We're keeping it simple and more DIY this time around. We're getting old and we don't have the energy we used to."
But bringing in a slew of new faces also keeps things fresh. For the uninitiated, One Night Band was created in 2009 by music blog Boston Band Crush, taking 40 musicians and randomly assigning them into groups of five. They have one full day to get together, come up with a band name, create a few original songs and one cover, and then show off their stuff later that night at the Middle East.
As Willard mentioned above, proceeds from this year's event will be split between Girl Rock Campaign Boston -- "a summer camp for girls ages 8-17 that strives to "end rocklessness in girls and women" -- and longtime partner ZUMIX, "a year-round youth music program whose mission is 'Empowered youth, who use music to make strong positive change in their lives, their communities, and the world.'"
Here's who will be getting down:
