Mp3 of the Week: The Lights Out "Today Was The Day" -- Friday @ T.T. The Bear's

It’s long been said that a concertgoer holding up a cellphone is the new flashing of the devil horns, which makes the cover of the LIGHTS OUT’S new record On Fire all the more symbolic of the times: an outstretched arm recording rock-and-roll magic (illegally?) while engulfed in flames, the image laid out on a Kodak print, the very entity killed off by this modern technology. It’s a juxtaposition that fits the Lights Out’s brand of no-bullshit throwback rock and roll, a ‘70s FM-dial joyride that manages to be free from fads while managing to stay sonically relevant. Crafted with the intent of “dismantling hipster snarkrock,” On Fire’s strongest weapon comes from “Today Was the Day,” a bluesy, prog-pronged puddle-jumper that might be the Lights Out’s most triumphant moment. Get the MP3 over at thePhoenix.com/onthedownload and flare up with the Lights Out’s record release party June 1 at T.T. the Bear’s Place alongside Dirty Virgins, the Fatal Flaw, and a resurrected Luxury.
