I think it was about this time last year we all started blowing ourselves in excitement over M83’s “Midnight City,” tripping over our sexy sax erections in declaring it –- before anyone else! -– the highly-coveted “Song of the Summer.” For once, everyone was right. Joint was the Song of the Year.
Because we’re up a goal, we’ll roll the dice this year and bet this new jam from Swedish pop duo ICONA POP will be in everyone’s Discman through Labor Day, inspiring dance parties on subway platforms and backyard BBQ from Stockbridge to Stockholm. Who cares that it's still May? “I Love It” is a true must-hear electro-pop anthem, fulfilling the early promise we heard from Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo in last year’s shoulda-been-hit-singles “Nights Like This” and “Manners.” The lyrics of “You’re so damn hard to please/We got to kill this switch/You’re from the ‘70s/But I’m a ‘90s bitch” are too fantastic for words.
We’ve needed a true ‘90s bitch ever since Meredith Brooks ruined it for everyone 15 years ago.
Of course, those lyrics were penned by UK pop vixen Charli XCX (she really shoulda kept this one for herself), so hat tip to the songwriting credit where credit is due. Back in March, the Phoenix’s Daniel Brockman made sure to catch Ms XCX down at SXSW, where she played in a church on a bill with Fiona Apple and Grimes, among others, and well, the Biz is usually on point with things like this.
The “I Love It” collabo is fairly mesmerizing for everyone, and all should be commended for their work here. But what if we play it so freaking much we’re all sick of it by Fourth of July? What then? Maybe Anthony Gonzalez will remix it.
