[wfnx morning show recap] Boston bedrooms go pop: Grand Resort + Orca Orca + Sinnet

Was just on WFNX a few minutes ago, talking about a few bedroom pop tracks that have been showing up with regularity on my Boston Accents playlist. After Dom created "Living In America" on the strength of a computer program, a pink paisley guitar and his beautiful musical mind, one-man-jams are all the rage. We guess. Here's a quick recap of what we spun this morning, with Bandcamp links and embeds:

The brainchild of 19-year-old Andres Pichardo of Brookline, Grand Resort's "Microscopic" is one of my favorite tracks of the new year, combining elements of synthpop, indie, and even traditional Japanese guitar-pop in a sound that gently echoes "Age of Consent." Look for it as the Boston Phoenix Mp3 of the Week for February 9, and check out the b-side, posted just last night, called "Recreation." We will likely soon lose Pichardo to Brooklyn, so we're putting an early claim on him now.

The latest cut from Allston's Jimmy Hewitt, "Underground" is the follow-up to last year's Change of Pace double-a-side release. It'll be included in a cassette release next month, a limited run of 100 tapes. Despite an initial fear of performing that forced Hewitt into his car to record vocals for Change of Pace -- so his roommates couldn't hear him sing -- he's starting to play out live around town, performing shows as a duo. One of Boston's most intrguing emerging songwriters.

When not playing guitar in indie heartthrobs the Fatal Flaw, Aaron Spransy creates magic on a laptop and mics under the Sinnet moniker. A few years old, the project has now been fleshed out into a full band (the 'Flaw's Joel Reader joined the gang for good measure) and they release Midwest Manners this Saturday night at the Middle East in Cambridge on a stellar bill alongside Soft Pyramids, One Happy Island, and Diamond Mines. "Castlevania" is this week's Mp3 of the Week in the Phoenix, but don't wait for it to get posted on Thursday -- grab it now!
