Can Young London break Old Boston?

A few years ago I wrote a piece for our city’s tortured tabloid daily that asked if Boys Like Girls were the commonwealth’s “biggest” band. Despite a limited presence in Boston proper and the nightclubs people like me use to gauge popularity around here, they seemed to be cracking two prime, wholly traditional, markets: Top 40 radio and teens in the suburbs. They had that pesky emo tag, but slowly, they were defining a label tracing a quicker route to widespread appeal -- pop -- with each national tour, radio appearance, iTunes spotlight, etc.

So with that in mind comes YOUNG LONDON, a radio-ready electro-pop duo out of Boston that may or may not lift their name from an Angels & Airwaves song. Last week Matt Rhodes and Sarah Graziani released the video above for the catchy-as-Ellsbury pop jam “Let Me Go,” a single produced by Mark Maxwell, who had a hand in Boys Like Girls’ 2010 record Heart Heart Heartbreak and lists Blake Lewis, Cobra Starship, and Millionaires on his resume.

“Let Me Go” seems to have massive mainstream breakout potential, especially outside this dodgy rock and roll town, and already feels like one of those songs you had no idea existed until you travel Europe and realize it’s fucking everywhere. Hey Russia, land of infinite techno-pop, get on this.

Someone has – Young London have already blown past 3,000 likes on Facebook.
