Don't miss: Record Store Day -- April 17, 2010

Will Dailey: Record Store Day 2010

Sandwiched on the calender between MLK Day and Columbus Day, comes yet another holiday celebrating a gone-but-not-forgotten architect of our national history: the record. This Saturday (April 17), independently owned music outlets across the nation will band together in recognition of all things vinyl for the third annual Record Store Day. Conceived by a Bull Moose employee in 2007, the day is now observed at 700 stores throughout the US and hundreds more worldwide.

In the past, a trip to your local shop on this holiest of holy days could score you a bevy of limited or reprinted gems. This year is shaping up to be no different, with the most anticipated releases arriving by way of Blur (first new single in seven years) and Modest Mouse (re-release of The Moon & Antartica on vinyl); there's also a Beastie Boys "mystery 12-inch" Energy Dome-sporting Bull Moose rep Chris Brown has the full scoop here.

Newbury Comics has apparently had this date circled for some time and will host events at 20 of their New England locations, with in-store appearances ranging from the Morning Benders (Fanueil Hall) to Martin Sexton (Newbury Street). So while the other 364 lossless days of the year can remain MP3 Days, there is really no excuse to not seek out a local participating outlet this weekend.
