SXSW 2010 (Thursday): Explode Into Colors

Explode Into Colors pwnd my heart at the Kill Rock Stars showcase this afternoon. They are one small lady shredding a classy, black and white Danelectro baritone guitar and two other ladies totally owning shit on parallel sets of drums.
Having two drummers has become something of a look these days. Almost like an accessory to that nice American Apparel V-Neck everyone’s complimenting you on. Not the case with EIC. This is melodic drumming. It’s calculated, it’s precise, it’s nearly tonal. I swear I heard the drum interplay carry the melody in at least two of their songs which freed singer Claudia to drop huge surf-riffs on her fuzzed-out baritone. The vocals were heavily effected through strings of pedals which caused their harmonies to float in, out from and around the band. And they played in a parking lot at the edge of a field on a beautiful day.
Like most things I get amped on, this is all adding up to be something from my imagination. Hm.
Below is a song from today and an interview with the band. Unfortunately my stupid flipcam died halfway through (I didn’t know) so I lost the second half of the interview. Some things that got cut:
-Their drummers went to school together, studied syncopated such and such that I didn’t quite understand. Would have been nice if the flipcam didn’t delete the footage.
-Their collective list of five things. Just five things, anything. Included: alien abduction and things they clearly made up. I swear it was funny. Anyway, enjoy.
