I'm hoping this doesn't turn into one of those situations where material ELLIOTT SMITH recorded before his untimely death in 2003 keeps surfacing every couple of years until we're scraping the absolute bottom. But it's okay: Kill Rock Stars is not releasing "Cecilia/Amanda" to coincide with the announcement of a "new" Elliott Smith album. Instead, they're planning on reissuing Smith's 1994 debut, Roman Candle, and 2004's posthumous release, From a Basement on the Hill, the album Smith was working on around the time of his death. "Cecilia/Amanda" dates back to 1997, and, according to the KRS press release, is a re-working of Smith's high school band, Stranger Than Fiction. And, though I doubt it was intended to, it kind of works as a bridge between Smith's spare early recordings and his lushly orchestrated later work.
