Passion Pit land their first #1 chart position
PASSION PIT: The Reeling
Their debut album hasn't even been released yet, but PASSION PIT are already towering over Kanye, Bat For Lashes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Sonic Youth on a national chart. That's right: for at least a week or so, the Pit have been esconced as the #1 slot on the "Hot Artists" list at the mp3-blog aggregator Elbo.ws.
OK, so it ain't exactly Billboard. Hell, it ain't even Hype Machine. But it's something. According to the Elbo.ws figures, the band has been featured in almost 900 blog posts, with a big percentage coming in the past 10 days, when they've been catching somewhere between 20 and 50 posts per day.
It's not just the blogosphere: when the late-adopting old media guys start jumping on the bandwagon, you're either the "next big indie rock breakout" . . . or the next band to be touted as the next indie-rock breakout who failed to sell any records. We're betting on the former, but having watched these things unfold over the years, we're praying that the hype gets dialed down just a smidge . . . or else you're going to see a lot more people responding this way. Bloggerazzi can be some fickle motherfuckers -- you give them a massive new single, they bitch about how come you ain't leaked the whole album yet.
Speaking of which, anybody got the whole album yet?
Passion Pit's Manners is out May 19; their next hometown show is June 18 at the Paradise.
