Primary Day is here and it's as good a time as any to take a look at the ProJo's coverage of what many have called Rhode Island's best political year in a generation.

The paper has had a few good scoops - witness columnist Ed Fitzpatrick's recent piece on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio meeting with the Republican National Committee in February amid speculation that he might run as a Republican.

Much has been written about whether Congressional candidate Bill Lynch will benefit from his brother Patrick's decision to drop out of the Democratic gubernatorial primary. But Patrick's decision could have far broader impacts on the political landscape.

To wit: without an expensive, highly contested Democratic primary for governor, candidates for Congress and statewide office have a much better chance of poking through the election-year chatter to reach voters.

Pawtucket Representative Peter Kilmartin, whose interest in running for attorney general was first reported here, has announced the beginnings of a campaign team. His new manager of communications, research and public affairs, Brett Broesder, says the campaign is still in the process of selecting campaign consultants.

Providence City Solicitor Joseph M. Fernandez, who has been quite public about his interest in running for Attorney General, has stepped down from his post to pursue "other opportunities." This just in from Mayor David N. Cicilline's office:
