The Cybersecurity Push

I noted in this space yesterday that Congressman Jim Langevin, who has long pushed for an upgrade to the nation's porous cyber defenses, has once again introduced legislation on the subject.

The new bill would carve out a special White House office on cybersecurity and aim to bolster a weak cybersecurity workforce, among other things.

Langevin's push has been bedeviled, in the past, by a US Senate that prefers to craft a more comprehensive cybersecurity bill. Early word is that the Congressman could face a similar obstacle this time around.

But Langevin will continue to argue that shoring up our computer defenses is an urgent matter - and that Congress must pass what it can, quickly, without waiting for the perfect, catch-all bill.

At stake is not just reform, but for Langevin, a chance to say - for the first time in his career - that he has pushed through a bill of true national significance.
