Lombardi Pulls in Cash

Providence mayoral candidates Angel Taveras, angling to become the city's first Latino mayor, and Steven Costantino, the powerful chairman of the House Finance Committee and winner of the Democratic Party's official imprimatur, have won much of the attention in the race.

But the third major candidate, longtime City Councilman John Lombardi, is showing strength with strong fundraising of late. In the July 1 to August 16 period, covered by the most recent campaign finance reports, he hauled in some $100,000, more than Taveras or Costantino.

Lombardi, who also leant his campaign $100,000, ended the period with almost $145,000 on hand. Costantino, who raised about $56,000 and leant himself $225,000, had $115,000 on hand, with large expenditures on television advertisements. Taveras, who raised about $43,000 and leant himself $25,000, had about $144,000 on hand.

Taveras has done well to pull together the sort of East Side-South Side coalition that propelled David Cicilline to the mayoralty. But now, in the home stretch, money can matter. And his opponents have plenty of it.
