Jilane's "breeding farms" almost feel like a dirty little
secret, considering how few people have sought out the Gears collection of art books, comics,
I hope you watched that entire Duke Nukem Forever trailer. Next, you should watch this compilation of one-liners from previous Duke Nukem games. Are you feeling like more of a man yet? Because I do. And I'm a woman. So that's saying something.
Duke Nukem Forever seems to be in a perpetual state of controversy.
My second day at PAX East began in the expo hall with an intense, emotional video. The Gambit Game Lab of MIT gathered some data about hate speech in gaming communities, and then they recorded actors performing the collected comments out loud. The video doesn't analyze the data collected or attempt to argue with the hate speech in any way, and the presenters at the booth told me they considered it to be more of an art project to increase awareness rather than an official study.
THE SONY NGP Is this a Magic Eye image? If I cross my eyes and back away, will I see a pussy?
I realize this controversy happened a week and a half ago, but it still makes me want to punch a wall until my hand falls off, so here we go.
Mr. Jaffe, you may recall saying the following statement about the new Sony NGP:
Yesterday, the Border House wrote The Evolution of Anya Stroud, a piece about Anya's development in the Gears franchise. They've linked to my coverage of Gears before, and they were one of the blogs that actively agreed with my claims of gender unfairness. Border House and I certainly don't run at cross purposes when it comes to wanting more inclusiveness in games.
LadyKillas Inc. made a game where you, a woman, gun down every dude who catcalls you in the street. The above video includes in-game footage of Hey Baby; watch it to get the gist.
The cutscene above, featuring FF13's female protagonist Lightning, occurs pretty early on in the game (maybe a couple hours in, depending on your playstyle). The scene establishes a few crucial aspects of Lightning's character: she's strong, she's tough, and she's completely fed up with Snow, the fiance of her maybe-dead sister Serah.
Don't worry. That title is a joke. Anya Stroud (at least, that's who we think that blonde woman is) in COG armor does not ruin this game. I think Gears 3 going to be pretty damn awesome. It probably would've been awesome without Anya -- but hey, she's there, and she's changed out of her pencil skirt, put on some armor, and picked up a lancer of her own.
Gears of War 3 hasn't been announced -- although the game's teaser debuts a week from today, and the game itself will be out in April 2011 or later. So, why am I thinking about Gears right now? Well, the recent "Girls & Games" PAX panel and its accompanied discussion about female characters made me think about how difficult it is to portray women in a male-centric story without making it seem like the entire gender has been forgotten and/or passed over.
The Penny Arcade Expo, aka PAX East, finally has arrived. 60,000 gamers hit up Boston to celebrate their hobby/obsession, check out sweet new releases, and meet the convention's hosts, Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, the webcomic author/artist duo of popular gaming webcomic Penny Arcade. As soon as I reached the con's vicinity, I began to scout out for fellow geeks.
GameCrush.Com launches today, and the service has already been hailed (by 600+ commenters on that article) as one of the dumbest things that the internet has wrought. Gamer girls proven to be cute via home-brewed glamour shots will play video-games with you online ... for a fee. Oh, and by the way, some of them might have boyfriends and most of them won't be seeing clients as potential love interests -- so stop those Pretty Woman fantasies before they start.
Don't worry -- the nudity-free trailer above for The Saboteur is perfectly safe for work.
But here's a link to a video that definitely isn't.
The Saboteur's main character frequents a strip club called Belle de Nuit. The strippers inside will be wearing pasties, unless you choose to download the nudity pack.
