HOT BLOCKS: Color Blocking

Spring runways are typically filled with pastel florals, muted renditions of Mother Nature's real-life blooms. This year, quiet combos of pale pink and sage green took a backseat to forget-me-not pairings of hot pink and vibrant orange, teal and cobalt blue, and marigold yellow and kelly green. Moschino, Gucci, and Prabal Gurung showed color-blocked looks in streamlined cuts - straight ankle pants, mid-calf skirts, and fitted blazers - for a slightly more conservative interpretation of '80s-era excess. The key to working this trend is to let the color speak for itself. (Shapes should be simple; the colors are screaming loudly enough.) The wallflowers among us can anchor a bold color with a beige base for a more subdued take on the trend. Look for colorful wardrobe building blocks, like the coral-and-purple silk "Reara" dress by Diane von Furstenberg, available at Wish (49 Charles Street, Boston, 617.227.4441) and Neiman Marcus (5 Copley Place, Boston, 617.536.3660).
