Judging from an email that WGBH president/CEO Jon Abbott sent to staff yesterday, things at Boston's public-broadcasting powerhouse aren't quite as bad as they are at, say, the Globe. But they're not great, either, for a bunch of distinct but related reasons.

Gawker's Hamilton Nolan raises an interesting point: if financial journalists tend to get inside info from the disgruntled rather than the sycophantic--and if recession-induced layoffs target the former than the latter--it could make covering Wall Street way more difficult.

But couldn't the impact of the recession on sources and the journalists who use them could extend even further?

Bad news coming out of Horticultural Hall: Boston Daily blogger Amy Derjue is now a casualty of the ongoing financial meltdown.

The good news, such as it is, is that Derjue will continue blogging here. Of course, DIY blogging tends not to pay the bills. But given the talent Derjue demonstrated during her BoMag stint, I'm guessing she'll catch on somewhere soon, shitty economic conditions notwithstanding. (How about it, Boston.com?)

It's easy, when grappling with questions like how mortage-backed securities actually work, to lose sight of the fact that Wall Street's current crisis has moral as well as financial implications.
