NY Times on the politics of gay marriage

Required reading in this Sunday's Times magazine: Bill Keller's explores the political ramifications of voting for gay marriage if you're a conservative Republican (or at least, a Republican backed by New York state's Conservative Party).

Among the highlights:

  • State Senator Mark Grisanti's quote: "I swore with my hand on the Bible to uphold the Constitution; I didn't swear with my hand on the Constitution to uphold the Bible."
  • The factor of "salience" - aka, how passionately you feel about an issue. The salience factor on gay marriage appears to be shifting, with supporters feeling just as strongly as opponents.
  • How voters, state party officials, and national lobbies for and against marriage equality deal with these four defecting Republicans in New York could say a lot about how elected officials in other states approach the issue.
  • "At the very least, voting for gay marriage, even if you are a Republican politician from the heartland, is not the risk it would have been just a couple of years ago. The four defectors aren't guaranteed re-election. But if they lose, it is likely to be in spite of their marriage vote, not because of it."
