Regulating crisis pregnancy centers

New York City just passed a law that would force so-called pregnancy counseling centers to disclose, in advertising, signs, and over the phone, whether or not they actually provide the full spectrum of resources and referrals (including for abortion and emergency contraception) and pre-natal services -- which many do not

Other cities have passed similar laws, and at least one is being battled in court. There are a dozen such centers in Maine; the ABBA Women's Resource Center, on Forest Ave in Portland, seems to be a moderate version of such operations (it does provide limited information about abortion and Plan B on its website) but still describes itself as a place to find "abortion clinic alternatives."

There's also this language: "ABBA, A Women's Resource Center has no financial interest in your pregnancy because we do not perform abortions or arrange adoptions." It calls to mind the rhetoric used during debate over the Pence Amendment and Planned Parenthood -- the implication that Planned Parenthood "sells" or "pushes" abortions for financial gain.

From the WSJ article: "The president of EMC Frontline Pregnancy Centers, Chris Slattery, said the NYC bill contains 'a grotesque violation of our First Amendment rights...We are there to protect women from this abortion industry,' he said." [Emphasis added.]
