Happy Birthday, Birth Control!

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth-control pill (or at least, of FDA approval of the Pill), and you can read its history in this Time magazine article.Consider these sobering stats, though, buried at the end of the article:

A study by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy found that 86% of young men and 88% of young women say it is important to avoid pregnancy in their lives right now. Yet 63% say they know little or nothing about birth control pills, and much of what they think they know is wrong. More than 40% think that even when using the Pill, a woman has a 50% or higher chance of getting pregnant in any given year; actually, the Pill is 92% effective.

I'm sure that abstinence-only education tucked into health-care reform will help clear things up.
