About that Trader Joe's...

The Christian Science Monitor Web site has a really interesting post detailing the machinations that may well lead to a Trader Joe's opening here in Portland.  Among the questions posed - and, for the most part, answered - are these:

-Why did the Federal Trade Commission decide first that Trader Joe's was not enough competition to negate anti-monopoly claims about the Whole Foods-Wild Oats merger, but then decide that putting a Trader Joe's into a market affected by that merger would be a good remedy for the resulting monopoly?

-How devoted will Trader Joe's be to the Portland market, given that it is a massively profitable company that could have come here anytime (and has been receiving pleas to come here for some time now), but didn't make plans to come here until it could get a federally-enhanced discount fire-sale price for a store location?
