New England colleges have gotten the memo

Fully half of a list of the nation's 10 greenest colleges are in New England. Here they are, along with their green highlights:

  • Yale University (Connecticut) -- undergoing a college-wide green audit (including athletics department); wants to reduce its emissions by 43 percent by 2020
  • College of the Atlantic (Maine) -- first carbon-neutral college; composting toilets in dorms
  • Tufts University (Massachusetts) -- exremely energy-efficient buildings; wind-powered dorm rooms!
  • University of New Hampshire (NH) -- run off landfill gas; considering earmarking endowment money specifically for efficiency programs
  • Middlebury College (Vermont) -- last year's graduating class left a $93,000 gift for green projects; hoping for full carbon-neutrality by 2016
