Mad Horse gets a home!
The SouthPortlander reports that Mad Horse Theatre Company, who are performing Alan Bennett's The History Boys for a few more days (read Megan Grumbling's review here), agreed with the South Portland City Council last night to rent the former Hutchins School on Mosher Street (barely a block from Lyric Music Theatre in what we might as well start calling South Portland's "Theater District").
Here's the link to the lease, which is a five-year agreement in which Mad Horse will pay $400 a month for the first three years, and $800 a month for the last two, as well as making nearly $25,000 worth of improvements to the building, including renovation, painting, and plumbing work.
The building can be used as storage for "theater arts materials," as well as rehearsals, workshops, programs for kids, and living quarters for a "building superintendent." Other non-profit theater groups can also use the space from time to time, under the terms of the lease.
The way the lease reads, Mad Horse will still have to have its actual performances elsewhere - they've been at the Portland Stage Company studio theater for some time now, and appear to be doing well in that space.
We look forward to seeing what they do with the place!
