Hey y'all, miss me? Well I sure as fuck missed you guys, and am thrilled to be back hosting BOSTON ACCENTS on the relaunched WFNX.com. Today's show was a big one -- it kickstarts a new era of programming, where we devote 60 minutes each day to new music from around New England, so join me here in the Phoenix newsroom every day from 5 to 6pm on the WFNX stream as we bounce around Massachusetts and ever so slightly beyond, bringing you the best in rock, pop and electronic music.
We are now just eight days away from the Halloween re-launch of WFNX, and we're celebrating tonight with a Boston Accents-flavored dance party just over the Green Monster at the Lansdowne Pub. I'll be spinning the dance party before and between the live acts, GENTLEMEN HALL and CASEY DESMOND, adding some hometown dance hits (Color Channel, Bearstronaut, Seer Group) into my modern indie and electro-pop playlist that's heard every Friday night at the pill.
Night 1 of the BOSTON ACCENTS FUNERAL PARTY is in the books, and we're nursing one motherfucker of a hangover over here on Brookline Avenue. We left all sorts of shit at Great Scott last night -- our iPhones, our pride, Justin Lally of Earthquake Party -- but the good news is we're back in the saddle for Night 2 later this evening.
So yeah, this is all kicking off tonight: WFNX BOSTON ACCENTS FUNERAL PARTY Night 1 featuring live performances by VIVA VIVA, RIBS, FAT CREEPS, and EARTHQUAKE PARTY. I'm feeling all kinds of frisky this afternoon, so I'll bring my laptop and spin some all-Boston tunes between bands, most likely the stuff I'd normally play on Sunday nights during my show.
To celebrate next week's three-night BOSTON ACCENTS FUNERAL PARTY at Great Scott (July 23 + 24 + 25; advance tickets here) we whipped up this exclusive 12-song soundtrack featuring all of the performing artists in the order of their appearance. As a unit, it's one sonic motherfucker and a great indication of our thriving and eclectic music scene and community, highlighted by a brand new track from indie darlings MEAN CREEK (an unreleased stomper off their upcoming Youth Companion full-length) as well as recent cuts from EARTHQUAKE PARTY, VIVA VIVA, GENTLEMEN HALL, BEARSTRONAUT, RIBS, MELLOW BRAVO, FAT CREEPS, BLACK LIGHT DINNER PARTY, and DIRTY VIRGINS
Here’s last night’s playlist, the final BOSTON ACCENTS, all 107 songs -- coicidentially close to 101.7, eh? Totes unplanned -- spun from 8 pm to sometime a little past 3:30 am this morning. I had a general idea of what I wanted to spin, but things quickly went off the rails as the night became more of a party than some formal, ahem professional, radio program.
The time has arrived. The last day of human programming on WFNX arrives next week – Saturday, July 21, to be precise – so that means there’s one last Sunday on the schedule before the sale to Clear Channel goes into high-gear and the station begins its transition to a web stream.
Of course, that means there’s one last BOSTON ACCENTS on the FM dial before we vacate our longtime home of 101.
And after tonight, there’s only one more show left – our time is nearly up on the FM dial, which is essentially the new AM dial. Don’t miss the grand finale for our Boston Accents as we currently know it, starting next Sunday at 8pm – we’ll have a bunch of in studio guests and maybe, just maybe, we’ll break curfew and party all night long.
So check it -- it was revealed this week that WFNX will live on as an online streaming station, breathing extended life into the 29-year-old alt-rock radio station. But we still only have two more shows here on the FM dial, and we don’t know what kind of form Boston Accents will take on (night, name, format, everything) once the station ceases its radio waves on Saturday, July 21.
Happy Sunday, and good tiding to all. This is our 4th to last Boston Accents on WFNX, and the countdown to extinction is really in full swing. Tonight we hyped Saturday’s big party at the Paradise, the WFNX Tribute “We Want The Airwaves.” Thanks to Bruce McDonald (who will host a warn-up show on WFNX Friday from 2 to 6pm) for hooking us up with a pair of tickets to give away, and props to Parlour Bells – performing that night alongside O Positive, Orbit, Garvy J, and a host of former WFNX DJs – who recorded “Airwaves” last week as a salute to our radio station.
Happy Father’s Day! Good vibes all around Boston on this beautiful spring day, so we’ll play a set dedicated to the dads around town, spin some Best Music Poll winners – that’s SOPHIA CACCIOLA of DO NOT FORSAKE ME OH MY DARLING there up top!; check out the full winner’s gallery here – and also get into some bands playing around Boston this week.
Hola Sunday! So while the past few weeks have focused on the negative – like our Funeral Parties and the death of WFNX, arriving around July 20 – tonight we’ll go back to focusing on bands playing shows around town. We broke it up into three segments: dance party to kick things off, a calendar-minded rock and roll creamy middle, then an old-school closing set to honor the We Want The Airwaves: A WFNX Tribute party at the Paradise on June 30.
A few weeks ago, WFNX program director Paul Driscoll was giving an interview to a local news crew when he quipped that the final days of the alt-rock radio station would be like an "Irish wake." Here in the world of BOSTON ACCENTS, we're taking that attitude out of the Lynn studio and into the Allston clubs. The final Boston Accents show is slated to air on Sunday July 15 (with an all-night sleepover theme where all are invited to hang out with us), and the following week we go out in motherfucking style with three nights of rock and roll at Great Scott in Allston
After a several weeks of in-studio guests (from the Daily Pravda to Hooray For Earth, Parlour Bells to RIBS), last night we set off on a solo journey through the rugged and wise seas of Boston rock. Felt weird to be up at WFNX all alone, but there was one important message to be delivered, so we needed your full attention: The Boston Accents Funeral Party lineup has been set, and goes down over three nights in July.
We’re not dead yet! As I mentioned on the Phoenix music blog On The Download last week, Boston Accents will be on the air every Sunday until the FCC transfers our license to Clear Channel in a few weeks. That gives us a handful of shows before we go bye-bye, and tonight we marked the occasion by bumping a fuckton of new jams from across Boston rock.
