With one week until SXSW, and a snowstorm ready to hit New England, I had Austin on the brain this afternoon, so we dedicated today's BOSTON ACCENTS to a handful of bands headed to Texas this month. For each band's full SXSW lineup and itinerary, click on the links to their respective homepages and/or profiles.
The BOSTON ACCENTS Thursday fun ship special sailed the electronic seas of New England pop this afternoon as we welcomed Connecticut-based sometimes-duo/sometimes-trio CHILD ACTOR to our WFNX studio in Boston. Max Heath and Natalie Plaza dropped by before their gig with FM Belfast tonight at Great Scott in Allston, and we talked about their "super maximalist" bedroom pop, their inclusion in last month's Phoenix Class of 2013, and their upcoming SXSW and West Coast tour run.
Bittersweet show today on BOSTON ACCENTS as one of my favorite performers is set to get into his Prius with his ladyfriend and permanently head down to Nashville. It was a pleasure to have folk singer/guitarist CALEB GROH here in the WFNX studio with me, drinking whiskey, talking shop and playing tunes.
Good times hanging in the WFNX studio today with Jen de la Osa and Henry Beguiristain of veteran Boston rock band ALOUD, who play T.T. The Bear's Place in Cambridge tomorrow night with Lifestyle and the Daily Pravda. The duo performed a stripped down set on the show today, unveiling two new songs, "After the Plague" and "Don't Let It Get You Down," and selected a majority of the show's playlist.
:: Here's today's BOSTON ACCENTS playlist, Tuesday, February 19, 2013, back in action after the three-day weekend. As always, you can listen online via WFNX.com, every day at 5pm EST.
BAD RABBITS “Fall In Love” -- We AVA'd this one earlier today, and added it into regular rotation on WFNX. American Love is our May 14.
Here's the playlist of the Valentine's Day edition of BOSTON ACCENTS on WFNX, a nice mix of new and old. But we had to lead it off with the Atlantics' 1980 classic "Lonelyhearts," which includes the timess lyric: “Take a crowbar to your heart and pry it loose...” Amen.
THE ATLANTICS “Lonelyhearts”
Back in the Monday swing after a few days away, courtesy of a blizzard and Peter Hook, not in that order, today BOSTON ACCENTS welcomed the fine young lads of CAMDEN to the WFNX studio. The band debuted two new tracks, which will be posted online tomorrow, and it was even Jim's 25th birthday. We opened with "Roadrunner" by the Modern Lovers, to support Joyce Linehan's excellent cause in making it the Official Song of Massachusetts
Due to the cold-hearted reality of alphabetization, WESTLAND was the thirteenth and final band listed in the Phoenix's recent Class of 2013. But if you've listened to Boston Accents on WFNX at all since January, it's clear that the Massachusetts pop-rock band is at the top of our lists. Tonight Westland hits the Middle East in Cambridge for their official Intimacy Without Intricacy, a sterling EP of hook-laden pop jams that already feature two of our favorite tracks of the year in "Steady Now" and "Jack & Coke."
THE LIGHTS OUT “Gottagetouttahere” -- In honor of the Superdome last night! As heard on Jersey Shore a few months back...
THE BOZO NIGHTMARE “Content & Satisfied” -- From The Moon And The Stars EP, playing Jacques Cabaret this Friday, February 8 with Death Walz '76 and Evan Greer.
THE MILLIGRAMS “You Don’t Need To Think” -- Off the Castin Spellz EP from October.
Are you an alligator? Cuz we're a mama-papa coming for you. Since the Patriots shit the bed two weeks ago, there wasn't any good reason to get excited for this weekend... until now. WFNX goes all-in on the Thin White Duke for our first ever SUPER BOWIE WEEKEND, a two-day broadcasting affair with more hits than Ray Lewis.
THE MIGS “Pretty Ricky” -- New video today from the New Hampshire garage rock band.
The Migs - Pretty Ricky from Michael Bucuzzo on Vimeo.
YANKEE POWER “Adopted Love Doll”
THE DOCTORS FOX “Autobiography of a Beached Whale” -- Playing the Milky Way tomorrow night; we caught up with these genre-bending cats last year in the Phoenix
Want the official soundtrack to CLASS OF 2013? Grab the entire compilation right now at the Phoenix's Bandcamp page and take home the 13 bands that we feel are going to have a pretty good year ahead, around our town and beyond. And tune in to WFNX.com Thursday, January 24 at 5pm EST as Boston Accents welcomes all the bands and artists featured here for one shit show radio party.
Hola! Apologies for the sick/travel day yesterday, hope you didn't mind the Bathtub Interview re-runs. But we're back in full-frontal force this afternoon, as we teased a few Class of 2013 bands on BOSTON ACCENTS today, as well as hyped up some gigs around town and Rock Show going on at the Middle East right about now
Our inaugural playlist of 2013 is hellbent for fuzz, kicking off with a ferocious track from indie veterans GUILLERMO SEXO. “Echo Out My Call” is a buzzed-out call-to-arms, and the first serving off the band’s new EP Bring Down Your Arms, out digitally this week. Rueben Bettsak of GSexo will be a guest on Boston Accents today, January 17, debuting his band's new songs and selecting other faves from around town (5pm EST, wfnx.
So this was a good time. Many thanks to PETER PRESCOTT of MISSION OF BURMA for dropping by WFNX and co-hosting BOSTON ACCENTS with me, and selecting today's playlist. We went nearly all-throwback, and dusted off some old classics. Burma hits the Sinclair in Cambridge this Saturday, January 19, and well yeah, we think you should attend.
