Lieberman to Endorse McCain Tomorrow But How Much It Will Help Is Questionable
Marc Ambinder is reporting that Democratic independent Joe Lieberman will endorse John McCain tomorrow.
The question is: Will it help him? Certainly not with Republicans. The question is how many conservative Democrats and independents will it mobilize to support McCain in New Hampshire.
The guess here is not many -- unless McCain is actively prepared to make an explicit last-minute case to independents why they should favor him over, say, Barack Obama. And even then, it might not work. It's interesting that with all the endorsements for McCain this weekend, he may be re-cementing a perception that he's the candidate of the centrist establishment. That may not be the most advantageous place to be this year.
This will undoubtedly start a wave of speculation as to whether McCain might consider a third-party run, should he lose his bid for the GOP nomination. So far, he's ruled it out and he has always remained a loyal Republican. But, of all the figures talked about in terms of a third-party run (Bloomberg, etc.), he'd undoubtedly do the best.
