Evaluating Romney's Speech
The key isn't really how this pundit would evaluate the speech: It's how the GOP base views it.
For views on that, Real Clear Politics has a collection of opinion. For the record, Pat Buchanan, Rush Limbaugh, Fred Barnes, and a host of other conservatives loved it. Remember that almost 40% of Iowa GOP voters consider themselves evangelicals. That was the audience Romney was trying to reach the most.
Did he? We'll find out over the next few weeks. But even should Romney pass Huckabee in the Iowa polls, the hunch here is that it will have less to do with this speech and more with the ferocious negative attention Huckabee is now getting both from the press and rivals like Fred Thompson.
One addendum:
There are pundits saying Romney surpassed JFK's "Houston Ministers" speech of 47 years ago. That's, shall we say, premature. Almost 50 years later, we're still talking about Kennedy's speech. Let's see how long people remember Romney's.
