[activist's notebook] Rally tonight in Copley Square against attacks on Gaza

Boston activists have called for an emergency rally tonight at 5pm in Copley Square in solidarity with the people of Gaza, in response to Israel's recent military attack on the Gaza Strip. More information about tonight's rally is on Facebook.

"The United States have pledged their unconditional support for the Israeli government including explicitly endorsing this most recent assault," wrote a representative of Northeastern's Students for Justice in Palestine, in a press release. "Nearly all of Israel’s military funding comes from the United States, which sends approximately $3 billion of military aid to Israel annually.

The press release continued: "Although coordinated at the last minute, as of Wednesday night thousands of people have been invited and at several hundred participants are expected. Simultaneously, there will be similar protests in cities such as New York, Washington D.C., London, Beirut, and Ramallah. There is widespread fear that this operation may escalate, as did the situation in 2008-2009, when Israel caused the death of more than 1,000 Palestinian civilians in 'Operation Cast Lead'."
